It is obvious you cannot run away from the many risks of being overweight – the increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, as well as increase in the chances of developing cancer and arthritis.
Ironically, more Africans have become obese in the recent times than they ever were. This is mostly put on how acutely people’s lifestyle trends have evolved over time.
Ugandans are generally having excessive TV viewing, excessive computer use, and insufficient physical activity. Not to mention bad eating habits; sugar-intense drinks and the rampant consumption of fast foods [such as fried potato chips]. Clearly, growing overweight under these circumstances becomes rather inevitable, even though reversing it is in itself daunting and long term. The working class men are always constrained by time. This is exactly why there are now slimming tablets for men.
When you take a stroll around supermarkets and pharmaceutical stores around Kampala, especially those owned by Asians, including Chinese investors, you’re immediately met with this disclosure about how desperately men are paying for good looks. Businessmen, in effect, are making money off this new obsession of men who want to appear to be in shape – by what is being called the “magic slim” and other pills available by internet purchase.
Vine Pharmacy and Nakumatt Supermarket are some of the leading dealers of these pills that they conveniently refer to as food supplements.
This, indeed, is like a magic wand that has come to town and very soon even more of these will be on every shelf of every supermarket and the reason is simple. The conventional weight-loss methods such as dietary changes and exercise are oftentimes looked at as unattainable and in the long run fail to suffice. On the contrary, pills are easy to use, making it a seemingly easy way to manage one’s weight.
How They Work
According to Ivan Nyombi, a private practicing Nutritionist in Kampala, these work by reducing your appetite.
Since to lose weight one requires to reduce the number of calories and eat only an amount he or she can ably burn, slimming pills are manufactured with ingredients that are known to suppress appetites.
The pills also boost your body’s ability to metabolize fat – convert it to energy – and produce heat in your body to hike up your energy expenditure, which is called thermogenesis.
These slimming pills are however known to have negativity on them.
“In as much as some of these medicines are authentic,” adds Mr. Nyombi, “they require to be prescribed by a medical personnel because otherwise they may cause one to be totally sick.”
Some of the adverse effects include migraines, vomiting and constant nausea, a dry mouth and diarrhea.
Dr. Nyombi, on that note advises that the pills be the last resort after trying out all the other fat-burning alternatives.
But if you must use them, it is important not to forget the following tips;
Drink a lot of water
Water is what stimulates your metabolism and weight-loss. Lack of water in the body cells is one of the reasons you gain weight in the first place. Lack of water makes you eat more instead.
Water is helpful because it helps the body to digest food faster.
You don’t even need to stick to unbearable diets and put limitations on yourself – just drink, drink and drink.
Drink 30 minutes before and after meals. But never ever drink during the meal. Drink no more than one glass of water per intake. 12-15 glasses a day. Water is your secret weapon in weight loss.
Get used to going to bed between 9 and 10 p.m. without delay.
When you fall asleep during these “happy hours” your body emits more melatonin than if you go to sleep after midnight. Melatonin is a hormone which relaxes you physically and emotionally during sleep.
This hormone makes the process of sleeping much deeper and more regenerating. Such a deep sleep removes any adverse effects of stress or anxiety. Stress is also one of the major reasons for gaining weight.
When you are anxious, your brain tells body cells to accumulate more fat as if you were in danger.
Storing fat in cells due to stress is how your body prepares to harsh conditions. This is a biological instinct. The better sleep, the less stress. The less stress, the less weight.
Fight the Junk
Strike any junk foods, soda drinks, sweets, fast food, etc. out of your life – all the stuff that makes you fat.
These “foods” are processed products of the food industry and contain trans fats, sugars and fast carbohydrates.
It is much better to switch to meals full of fiber, slow carbohydrates and Proteins.
This is not telling you to stop eating junk at all. Simply reduce the proportion of such foods in your diet.
The less processed food you eat, the less fat you gain.
And avoid eating fast carbohydrates and proteins together – these foods have different acidity levels and are incompatible during digestion.
Stay in a Shape, working out
If you enjoy walking – walk, if you feel comfortable with running – run.
Work out for fun and joy, not because you have to. It doesn’t matter how many calories you burn during your activity. The main thing is the fact that you are active.
However, working out is responsible for only 20% of your weight loss process while nutrition is accountable for the remaining 80%.
