Many mothers will do anything to increase the breast milk. But while you can pick up a few tips from well-intentioned friends, oftentimes wrong information is passed along, sometimes for several generations.
For instance, in some cultures, it’s believed that beer helps to stimulate breast milk. However, nutritionists say this is simply a falsehood. As a matter of fact, alcohol can have serious and permanent adverse effects on children, such as brain damage.
Nutritionists say that it is important to seek professional medical advice establish at this stage what might be the real solution to your problem. Most of the time though the problem has to do with the mother’s diet and as such adjust accordingly.
Resty Namuswe, a certified nutritionist, recently attached to Kivumbi Press suggests the following foods that are sure to raise milk production level for nursing mothers;
- Water
Drinking water is one of the best ways to improve your milk supply. Nursing depletes your body of fluids so it makes sense that drinking water will help you to stay hydrated and produce more milk.

- Whole grains
These, which include rice and oatmeal are also known as comfort foods. When a woman eats a bowl of oatmeal, it may help her to relax, which in return may cause your body to release oxytocin (a hormone responsible for milk production).
- Dark leafy green vegetables
These include asparagus and spinach. These foods contain phytoestrogens, chemicals, which are believed to promote breast tissue health and lactation. They are plant-based chemicals that have similar properties as estrogen.
- Carrots
It is believed to provide extra energy needed by the lactating women and it may improve the supply and quality of breast milk. Drinking a cup of carrot juice just before lunch may give your afternoon supply a boost.

- Legumes
Chickpeas, lentils and green beans are frequently used lactogenic foods.
- Pawpaw
These may enhance breast tissue as well as improve lactation. Pawpaw has also been used as a natural sedative. The sedating quality may help you relax and help with the milk let-down process.
