Apart From The Modest “Best Picture” Gaffe, The 2017 Oscar Awards Night Was One To Savor

This year’s much anticipated [89th] Academy Awards finally went down last evening, Sunday, February 26, and as it turned out, Moonlight won three awards, including Best Picture, and La La Land won the most awards of the ceremony, with six, after receiving a record-tying 14 nominations.

La La Land had been [erroneously] announced as the Best Picture, before Moonlight was clarified to be the winner. Hacksaw Ridge and Manchester by the Sea won two awards each.

Other winners include Arrival, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Fences, The Jungle Book, O.J.: Made in America, Piper, The Salesman, Sing, Suicide Squad, The White Helmets, and Zootopia, with one.

Whereas “La La Land” ended up scooping the Best Director Award and Lead Actress (Emma Stone), Casey Affleck took home the lead actor award for “Manchester By the Sea,” at the expense of Andrew Garfield, Ryan Gosling, Viggo Mortensen and Denzel Washington.

Meanwhile “Moonlight’s” Mahershala Ali took home the trophy for supporting actor. Viola Davis won the supporting actress Oscar for her work in “Fences.”

“O.J.: Made in America” was named the winner in the feature documentary category, while Iran’s “The Salesman” won the foreign-language film Oscar. The latter’s director, Asghar Farhadi, declined to attend the ceremony in the wake of the Trump administration’s travel ban.

The 2017 Academy Awards [commonly referred to as Oscars] took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the telecast live on TV.
